What a Wonderful Word

I know I'm a little late to the game, but I've recently come up with a word, er, more like concept that I'd like to incorporate into 2014. Actually, it snuck up on me way back in good ol' 2013, about a month ago in a yoga class. The theme of the class was brahmacharya, which is most classically defined as sexual celibacy or restraint in order to save those energies to unite with the Divine. This teacher, however, echoed the same (more liberal) interpretation that I had learned in my teacher training: it is also about living a life of moderation and restraint in all of the senses.* For me, it is the idea of making good choices for yourself in your diet, your activities, and all of your habits, in moderation. I am a terrible all-or-nothing-er in that I don't like to be told that I can NEVER have certain things. However, I think that I've gotten a little lazy about saying no to those same things: Desert everyday, that second (or third!) glass of wine, the impulse buy on the sale rack, or Starbucks whenever the mood strikes. I realized that when you are always saying YES to all of those little "extras" in life, it starts to take the specialness away from them. They're no longer treats anymore, they're the norm. I want to get back to making the things I love "special," because I think it's really nice to have them to look forward to, or as a reward for a job well done. I think I've just fallen into a pattern of, "well, I'm bored, so...I deserve to stop at Starbucks!" or, "It's raining, so...I should sleep in...AGAIN," which of course, are not very good reasons at all. It's about saying no, so that I can say yes at a later time when I know I will truly appreciate and savor whatever it is I've been waiting for.

For many years, the theater I worked for had (and still has) an annual production of A Christmas Carol. One of my very favorite lines from that show is said by Mrs. Cratchit as they sit down to what appears to be a very modest Christmas dinner. Mr. Cratchit remarks that it will be enough, and Mrs. Cratchit repsonds, "Enough. What a wonderful word: Enough." Without fail, every time I hear that line, I tear up. I don't drive a fancy car or have designer clothes in my closet, but I live in a world of such abundance that it is easy to forget what "enough" really means. That's why I making it my "word" for 2014, one to remind me of what I already have and the gratitude for the riches already in my life. And when I forget, and feel myself tempted to reach for another cookie, I hope it serves to remind me of brahmacharya and of making things special again.

Did you choose a word or set an intention for 2014?

* Footnote: Now, if you want to get all technical, this is a very loose interpretation of the concept of brahmacharya. In fact, when I saw down to start typing this post, I came across a bit of (deserved) controversy that Lululemon got itself into recently when they used it as part of a recent marketing campaign. There is a lot of back info I could go into here about the Yoga Sutras, the yamas, etc., but I actually don't think it really matters too much, except to acknowledge that this interpretation is an extraction of an abstraction of an idea and concept that was applied to a world very different from the one we inhabit today. What I love about yoga is that there are a jillion ways to make it work for you and your life, and I in particular, adhere to a belief system that allows for softness and imperfection in my practice both on and off the mat. Is also allows for room in our understanding of teachings that are over 5,000 years old, and finding the ways that they make sense in our modern lives.

Checking In >> From the Road

Heya, everyone! In case you haven't noticed already from the many times I've said I'd be traveling, I'm on the road right now! I just wanted to check in and say an actual hello. I scheduled a bunch of posts for while I'd be away, so things haven't skipped a beat around here, but I have been busy sleeping in a tent, being bitten by copious amounts of mosquitoes, and feeling the sun shine on my face and the trail under my feet. We're about half-way through our trip right now, and taking a breather with a friend who lives in Bozeman, Montana.

{An aside // Sorry I haven't been able to respond to most comments/messages/etc.! I've been reading them when they download in the brief moments I might get service somewhere, but my ability to respond has been limited. Also, I can't wait to catch up with everyone's blogs/feeds when I get back!}

Overall, we've been having a great time, with just a few small set backs. One almost involved this picture.
Crossing this stream was tough, and a little scary. You can't tell from the picture, but the water was moving very fast and the current was pretty strong. Not to mention, the water was ice cold. I also didn't have sandals to do it in, so I had to do it barefoot. It took all of my concentration to not slip and/or not let myself be pushed over by the current. A few years ago, I know for a fact that I never would have attempted this, so I was SO PROUD of myself when I took a deep breath, and just did it. And succeeded!

Things are not all triumph though, and there were other crossings I wimped out on. And then promptly beat myself up for not being "brave" enough to do it. I'm glad I have this picture to remind me that sometimes it literally is one step at a time to accomplish hard things. One of my favorite yoga teachers sometimes uses the mantra "inhale acceptance, exhale expectation," in her classes, and it's one of my favorites. I think that's what travel is all about on some level, and this trip has definitely had many moments where I can put that mantra to good use.

Today is our last day of bumming around for a few days, as we're heading to Yellowstone tomorrow bright and early for a few days of backpacking and hiking into geyser country. I am crossing my fingers that there aren't any crazy creek crossings. ;)

Affirmations >> 06

Of my favorite themes of my yoga practice, both on and off the mat, is gratitude. Honestly, I just can't get enough. Sometimes all it takes is noticing the small things in life that are good, to help us change our perspective on the not so good.
I hope you take a minute to close your eyes, take a deep breath, and think of one thing in your life that you are grateful for today.

Affirmations >> 05

I had a little fun editing pictures today, and I came up with this for this edition of affirmations >
I think no matter what your beliefs are, or even lack thereof, that the outdoors is truly a refuge for everyone. I took this photo last week, while we were out for a day of mini-adventure (I'll share more about that later this week).

Yesterday we looked at an apartment that we liked a lot, and put in an application for it. It's maybe a bit smaller than our current place, but waaaaaay more functional. One of the other benefits of it is that it is very near the water and several parks, so we could "get our outdoors on" pretty easily. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Affirmations >> 04

I'm missing my family and home a bit today on this Easter Sunday, but the quote above is a nice reminder to take notice of the world around me and enjoy what I do have. I'm not only spending today 2,000 miles from my family, but also stuck at work on a gorgeous spring day. Ah, well...

Easter has always been one of my favorite holidays, as spring is my favorite season. Or at least it was. I don't think I have a favorite anymore. I just enjoy how they change from one to the next, each with it's own rituals and events. At any rate, I love the flowers, the colors, the CANDY, and the food of a traditional Easter. I can't wait to do egg hunts with my kids someday. :)

I hope whether you are celebrating or not, with family and friends or not, that you are having a peace-filled day.

Affirmation >> 03

Whether you are partnered or single, love the holiday or loathe it, we all struggle with this message sometimes. Take all the love and awesomeness and greatness floating out there today and everyday, and run with it!

While it's great to export all of our energy to others on this holiday, don't forget to do something special for yourself today, too. Run a bath, stop at a Starbucks and get your favorite drink, blast your favorite guilty pleasure and sing along. While you do it, remind yourself that you are worthy of love and happiness. <3

Happy Valentine's Day!

Affirmation >> 02

This week's affirmation comes at a point when I feel like the New Year's intentions we set for ourselves really start to wane. I know that's definitely true for me! I find it really hard during the dog days of winter (if you will) to feel motivated and inspired to make healthy decisions. My mind says, "Go for a long walk! Eat that kale!" and my body says, "Let's watch a movie! And drink lots of mugs of hot chocolate!"

So, this one is for any of you struggling alongside me this week. :)

Affirmations >> 01

Hiya. I thought I would start a semi-regular (since I am no good at straight regular) series on here of affirmations.

Affirmations can be powerful tools. Our heads are often filled with so much negative self-talk, and we all know how powerful THAT can be, amitrite? So, let's flip the script on it. Let's tell ourselves positive, loving, and powerful things. Let's build ourselves up rather than tear ourselves down. I chose this first affirmation because the name of my blog, abhaya, is the sanskrit word for fearlessness. I have let fear get the best of me on too many occasions, and it really does keep me from living my best life. This affirmation reminds me to get out there, try new things, take leaps, and say YES.

Happy Wednesday, everyone!
